Fortune and Men's Eyes a film adaptation in 1971 of a 1969 play (more on that later.) It is about Smitty a 17-year-old who is sentenced to prison for a minor burglary, with themes of homosexuality and sexual slavery. His cellmates are Rocky, Queenie, and Mona. Smitty is heterosexual, after initial sexual abuse and rape he becomes cock of the walk. After which he too becomes a predator. The 1969 play was produced and directed by Sal Mineo produced at the Coronet Theatre in Los Angeles. A sexy young Don Johnson (Miami Vice) played the lead role of Smitty and Michael Greer played the role of Queenie. Mineo appeared in the role of Rocky. This is a very rare and unique footage, duration sixteen minutes, was recently discovered. The video was produced for advertising purposes of the play starting Sal Mineo (1939-1976) who also appeared in “Rebel Without a Cause” (1955) and “Giant” (1956) alongside James Dean, (photo here.) Sal was an actor and modes for many photo artists (“New Adam” photo link here) . When his youthfulness began to fade in his thirties and rumors of homosexuality the movie offers grinded to a halt. He held several passion projects and one was the 1967 play "Fortune and Men's Eyes" by John Herbert.
Mineo directed and starred in the theatrical production (playbill with Johnson ) " but not in the film version. The play was controversial because of the explicit rape and nudity scenes, it starred gay actor Michael Greer and an emerging new talent, Don Johnson (Miami Vice.)
